Our History and Mission
Harivilas Foundation is an established educational charity in Chennai, India, focused on helping students complete their schooling. We do this by primarily providing scholarships for qualified low-income kids towards their school fees and by providing medical aid for the family members (when the medical condition could impact the children's schooling). A small portion of our help is also targeted towards helping disaster victims and to other social welfare organizations.
Harivilas Foundation was started by our parents in 1996 as a way to give back to society. After our parents' passing recently, it continues to be managed by us, who also make up the foundation's volunteer team.
In the year we started, we could support only a few students, that too only partially! With support from friends and family, we have grown to support several students, even though there are many more students that need help.
Our goal is to be able to help at least hundred deserving kids every year.
Our Approach
- We are a hundred percent volunteer team. This helps keep the non-program expenses to a minimum.
- The volunteers personally meet and evaluate every applicant.
- Whenever possible, the scholarship is provided as reimbursement to ensure the family's and the student's commitment to staying in school.
- We track the students' progress in school to ensure that they continue to meet the scholarship's eligibility requirements.
